Rugby Darmstadt
MATCH REPORT.
SG Heusenstamm/Götzenhain 19 - 20 Rugby Darmstadt
So here it is, the final match report of 2022. And what a match it was. The Darmstadt rugby boys travelled to Heusenstamm to face a strong and well-prepared Heusenstamm/Götzenhain team, featuring a mix of some 1. Bundesliga players and talented youth players, who, despite being half the age of the average Darmstadt player, probably had more years of rugby experience. The result was an exciting and closely-contented 80 minutes of rugby.
Darmstadt kicked off and the opening minutes set the tone for the physicality of the match, with some big carries from Heusenstamm. However, the Darmstadt defence remained organised and was able to soak up the pressure. After a missed Heusenstamm penalty kick, Darmstadt made some territorial gains into the opponents half with some good phase play. A well work back move saw the centres draw in the defence narrow before some nice quick hands saw Ettore put his fellow winger Ernesto through to score in the corner. Franz nailed the conversion and quickly added another penalty following a Heusenstamm offside in front of the posts. Darmstadt continued to play some good phase play with the ball but a few handling errors crept in, giving Heusenstamm more of the ball. Some of their power runners started to cause issues for the Darmstadt defence, as Ettore found out when he was bounced into next week by a huge fend from his opposite wing. After a numbers of pick and goes off Darmstadt‘s 5 meter, Heusenstamm eventually crossed for a try. No conversion.
Darmstadt reacted quickly, and after scooping a loose ball in the Heusenstamm 22, Henry went crashing over the line but was deemed to be held up. After a couple of penalties, Heusenstamm were back in the Darmstadt 22 and used the threat of the pick and go to draw in defenders before finding space in the back line. The conversion was good and Darmstadt went into the break trailing 10-12.
Second half and Darmstadt were soon under pressure following a 50-22 kick. The resulting phases saw Heusenstamm deploy the pick and go again but were this time held up. However Franz forgot the „drop-kick“ part of the goal-line dropout rule and it was a 5m scrum to the opponents. The boys put in a great defensive shift to keep out the opponents, particularly the forwards, who were strong in the scrum and stole a number of lineouts. Back up the other end of the pitch and following some good carries from the Darmstadt players, a crash ball was called 5m off the Heusenstamm line. PvH stepped up as the most unlikeliest of candidates but put in a nice step and showed some great power to cross for the try. Conversion was unfortunately missed. Heusenstamm then received a yellow for not retreating 10 at the penalty and making use of the one man advantage, Franz slotted in another trademark grubber kick for Henry to dive on and score the try. No conversion.
Soon after, Darmstadt had a big chance after Henry found a gap in the defence off a lineout move and made a some good meters, however the final pass to put Ettore through was a couple of inches too flat and it was knocked on. As the second half progressed, the physicality of the match began to show. Darmstadt‘s 4 subs, consisting mainly of players who were already carrying injuries from before the game, were quickly all on the field to replace those who were injured during the game. The situation got particularly bad as the Darmstadt backline was suddenly greatly outnumbered in defence following a Heusenstamm turnover, not helped by the fact Gerrit was 20 meters away vomiting. In the final 10 minutes Darmstadt did well to hold their composure in defence, forcing a number of penalties from the opponent. However with the final play of the game Heusenstamm grabbed a try following another powerful run by the winger. Final score 20-19 in favour of Darmstadt.
We‘d like to say a big thank you to Heusenstamm for a very entertaining and hard-fought match which was easy contender for the best game of 2022. A big thank you to the refereeing team too and of course to the supporters who travelled to watch. We look forward to the return fixture and some more great rugby when the season restarts in 2023.
MoM - Franz Paschke, for another great performance, really putting his stamp on the number 10 shirt
DoD - Felix Romero (stand-in coach) for the rather interesting tactical change in brining on a prop to play at flanker
