MATCH REPORT. Darmstadt Rugby 92 - 0 Riedberg The boys had their last home game of the calendar year on Saturday against Riedberg in the Bürgerparkstadion, and what a day for rugby it was. With the sun shining and a very un-Autumnal 23 degrees, the crowds poured into the 6000 person capacity stadium, with a number of old boys as well as a couple of policemen among them (they were only there to watch, i promise). Riedberg kicked off and the Darmstadt boys went coast to coast in a few phases with Ernesto finishing in the corner. A couple more similar plays ended with Martin and Ernesto adding more tries to make it 17-0 in the first 10 minutes. Simon then ran a strong line through the middle, offloading to Patrick M. For a good forwards combination try. Riedberg began to get a foot back in the game and put up a good challenge. A few kicks and (of course) a few Darmstadt penalties later they were pressuring with a lineout on our 5m. However a clever steal and quick counterattack allowed Ernesto to run most the pitch before offloading to Henry for a try. A few more tried were added including a strong run by Lars to end the half at 48-0 up. The second half kicked off and Darmstadt took a while to find their rhythm against a better organised Riedberg defence, before finally adding a couple of tries, including a nice snipe from Andi at 9 and another strong run from Patrick M. The heat began to be a problem for some of Irish and Scottish players in the team. After a fantastic 50:22 kick, Rupert‘s hamstring decided it didn‘t want to work any more, and by the 50 minute mark Sam was showing signs of strong sunburn. Darmstadt reverted back to type shortly afterwards when Franz had a physical ‚discussion’ with the Rieberg fullback after he mistook the ball on the pitch for those in Franz‘s shorts when trying to turnover a ruck. Needless to say Felix, the referee was less than impressed and gave them both yellow. Moments later, Felix went to the pocket again to give Andi a yellow for somehow managing a high tackle. With Darmstadt down to 13 and both half-backs in the bin, Leo stepped in at 9 and Henry at 10. The boys pushed on and the tries continued to come with Henry and PvH adding a couple. Once Franz and Andi were back from the naughty step the boys ended strongly with a flurry of tries from PvH, Ernesto and couple of others. Final score 92-0. Big thanks to Riedberg for an enjoyable and well contested match and a big congratulations to Felix for refereeing his first Darmstadt match (and thank you for only sending off two of our players). Finally a big thanks to all those who helped set up the pitch, food and beer. Other notable events from the match: - In a contender for worst backs move ever, Rupert, Henry and PvH messed up their timing of their runs, only succeeding in simultaneously tripping each other up, with the ball cannoning forward into the opposition’s hands off Patrick‘s head - With Leo making his debut at scrumhalf after starting at number 8, he is quickly rivalling Gerrit for the sheer amount of positions played for Darmstadt - As Riedberg were down a player, Sam kindly stepped in to play second row for the first half. At half-time he was replaced with 170cm, 70kg Ettore, who was asked to play second row. He actually started as flanker, before Riedberg realised this was an equally bad idea and put him at 15 - Clearly enjoying playing against his teammates, Ettore put in quite a good shift at fullback, bringing down Patrick M. After he broke through to prevent his hat-trick and also dump tackling Ernesto, a man twice his height - After breaking through a few tackles (including handing off Ettore in the face) Henry was brought down by the Riedburg fullback with a high tackle to the neck. To add salt to the wound, Felix came over to give the penalty against Henry as he lay on the floor unable to breathe MoM - Simon Lehr for another standout performance DoD - Franz and Andi, no real explanation needed
